What are soap flakes?

Soap flakes are exactly like they sound, they’re ground soap. The unique thing about our Laundry Evangelist Soap Flakes is that they are formulated for laundry. This isn’t really a new concept, up until 1980 you could buy them in the grocery store, and since then they’ve been kind of a specialty thing.

What are soap flakes made out of?

Our soap flakes are made of Sunflower Oil, Food Grade Lye, and Organic Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil. So they’re all plant-based, they’re completely safe, and the pH is balanced for laundry!

The problem with DIY laundry soap

You hear sometimes that there’s these recipes on the internet to add washing soda and add borax to your ground bar soap. You're taking a bar soap, that's not formulated to wash your clothes so you’re adding softeners like washing soda and you're adding grit like borax because you don’t have the other things.

What to look for in Laundry Soap Flakes

What you want is a plant-based soap, so you don’t want sodium tallowate. You want them to work and so why our soap flakes work is because they rinse completely clean.

A lot of detergents have petroleum or they have oils or things in them that stick to the bin of your washer and it sticks to your clothes, it actually coats your clothes and it makes it harder to get stains out. What’s unique about soap is that it rinses completely clean, and that’s why I love it.

How do you use Laundry Soap Flakes

How much should you use?

You want to use a tablespoon of soap flakes per load. You just throw a tablespoon in right on top of the clothes, so just open the washer throw them on top of the clothes and wash.

What temperature should you use for your wash cycle when using soap flakes?

They are best in warm water! Soap flakes will dissolve in cold water - they just don’t dissolve as fast. So if you're going to use a cold cycle, just know you know that they’re going to dissolve only in the last two or three minutes of the wash cycle, not the full eight (because of course we always use the express cycle). So I wash them in warm water.

How to hand wash with Laundry Soap Flakes

If you want to hand wash with them, you grab a little pinch, and it’s a little pinch, it’s like you were going to salt your salad - it’s a tiny pinch. I throw them in a mug of really hot water, I stir it up and dissolve them and then dump it into the sink when I’m going to wash.

You can dissolve them in the sink, you just have to put them in and kinda swish. To me, the other way is easier.

So that’s how you use soap flakes, how soap flakes are made, and what they are. If you have any questions, for heaven’s sakes reach out: you know I love to talk about soap flakes, but more than anything else I hope you have a great day. Thanks for watching!
