After years of answering laundry questions, I realized something: most stains fall into just a few categories. Once you understand what kind of stain you’re dealing with, removing it becomes much easier.

Before you dive into the stain library, I recommend watching this quick video where I explain the three main types of stains you’re going to encounter in your laundry.

Watch on YouTube

In laundry, about 90% of stains fall into one of three categories.

Inorganic Stains

Inorganic stains are things like ink, dyes, or anything that’s man-made.

Organic Stains

Organic stains are the most common. These include things like blood, red wine, and grass. If it comes from something natural, it usually falls into this category.

Oily Stains

Then there are oily stains. These are things that contain fats or oils. Butter, salad dressing, cooking oils β€” basically anything delicious tends to fall into this group.

Combination Stains

What’s interesting is that many stains are actually a combination of two types. For example, lipstick is both oily and inorganic, which is why it can be one of the trickier stains to remove.

Once you start thinking about stains this way, laundry gets a lot simpler. When you know what type of stain you’re dealing with, you know exactly how to treat it.

Below you’ll find my stain library. Click on the stain you’re dealing with, and I’ll walk you through exactly how to remove it.

And if you’re looking at a stain and thinking, β€œI have no idea what this is,” don’t worry β€” that happens all the time.

You can watch my mystery stain video here, and I’ll show you how I figure out what a stain is and how to treat it.
